Why Gunite Pools matter in Fort Worth, Texas
In Fort Worth and the surrounding DFW area, Gunite pools, often referred to as reinforced concrete pools, are frequently the ideal choice for custom pools due to their unmatched strength, design flexibility, and long-term durability.
The region's expansive clay soils swell when wet and shrink when dry. A properly engineered rebar and Gunite shell creates a rigid, monolithic structure, enabling it to withstand soil movement better than the one-piece molded shells commonly used in pool construction.
Although freeze events are not common in DFW, they do happen. Gunite pool builds typically allow for more robust detailing around tile lines, bond beams, coping interfaces, and plumbing penetrations, which is crucial for managing the occasional severe freeze.
With limitless design flexibility that suits tight lots and traditional “Texas backyard” features, Gunite pools can be customized into true custom shapes, including tanning ledges, deep-end geometry, raised spas, and negative edges—options that fiberglass pools cannot provide due to constraints with factory molds.
In terms of long-term serviceability, the surfaces of Gunite pools, which consist of plaster or pebble, are easily renovated, and many future modifications, such as adding returns, lights, or features, are much more feasible with concrete shells than with molded alternatives.
The structural strength potential for Gunite pools is notably high when built correctly, considering steel schedules, thickness, mix, and curing processes. This resilience is why Gunite is often regarded as the “gold standard” for custom concrete pools and is favored by professional swimming pool builders.
